What is SEO

SEO is the set of practices that adapt a website so it appears high in Google results when someone searches for what you offer. The abbreviation stands for Search Engine Optimisation. Unlike paid ads, SEO is not charged per click - but it takes 3 to 6 months to show results.

How it works

How Google decides who comes first

To understand what SEO is, you first need to know what Google does before it shows any results. There are four steps and each one can break.

01

Crawl

Googlebot moves across the web following links. If no link points to your page and it is not submitted through a sitemap, the crawler does not know it exists.

02

Index

What the crawler finds gets written into the index. A page that is not indexed cannot appear in search, no matter how good it is.

03

Ranking

When someone searches, Google selects and orders pages from the index. It weighs content relevance, domain authority, speed, the user’s location and hundreds of other factors.

04

Display

The result appears as a blue link, a Maps card, a featured snippet or an AI summary. Each of those formats needs the page prepared differently.

Three pillars

What SEO consists of

SEO for a website splits into three areas. If any one is missing, the other two cannot make up the difference.

Technical SEO

Loading speed, the mobile version, HTTPS, URL structure, sitemap, robots.txt, canonical tags and Schema markup. This is the foundation - without it Google struggles to read the site.

On-page SEO

Content and how it is organised: H1 and H2 headings, meta descriptions, keywords in the copy, internal links, image alt text. This is where the page declares what it is about.

Off-page SEO

Everything happening away from your site - backlinks from other sites, brand mentions, reviews, local citations. This builds authority and shifts the slowest.

Terms

Terms you will meet constantly

The basic vocabulary, without which any conversation about SEO is unintelligible.

Keywords

The phrases people type into Google. Not what you think you offer, but what your customer actually types - and that is often entirely different, which is why it is checked with tools.

Backlink

A link from someone else’s site to yours. Google reads it as a recommendation. One link from a relevant local site is worth more than a hundred from random pages.

Search Console

A free Google tool showing which phrases you appear for, how many clicks you get and which pages have indexing problems. The first thing to set up.

Core Web Vitals

Three measures of page speed and stability. Google uses them as a ranking signal, and visitors feel them as slow loading and jumping content.

Local SEO

Optimisation for searches tied to a city or proximity. It leans on the Google Business Profile, accurate NAP data and reviews more than on the site content itself.

Schema markup

Invisible code that explains to Google and AI tools what each part of a page is - address, opening hours, price, question and answer.

Expectations

How long SEO takes to show results

This is the question most engagements fail on, because expectations are never set at the start. A realistic schedule for a new or poorly optimised site looks like this:

  • Month one. Technical fixes and setting up measurement. Progress shows in the tools, not in traffic.
  • Months two and three. New pages get indexed and start appearing for long-tail phrases with little competition. The first enquiries usually come from here.
  • Months four to six. Position growth on phrases with real volume. This is where you see whether the strategy works.
  • After six months. Competitive phrases and continuous content expansion. This is the phase where SEO becomes cheaper per acquired client than advertising.

If someone promises you first place within a month, it is either a phrase nobody searches for or a promise that will not be kept.

DIY

What you can do yourself, today

You do not need an agency for the first few steps, and it is only fair to say so. Set up Google Search Console and submit a sitemap - it is free and you immediately see whether Google can find your pages at all.

Complete your Google Business Profile. Accurate address, phone, opening hours, categories and photos. For local businesses in Bosnia this often brings more than months of work on the site itself.

Check your speed with PageSpeed Insights. If the page takes longer than three seconds on a phone, that is the first problem to solve.

Write unique titles and meta descriptions for every page. Duplicate titles are the most common error on small sites and the easiest to fix.

If after that you want to go further - competitive phrases, a content strategy and backlinks - that is usually where the work of an SEO agency begins.

Myths

Four beliefs that cost money

"SEO is done once"

Competitors keep working, Google changes its algorithm and content ages. SEO is maintenance, not a one-off procedure - much like bookkeeping.

"We will buy backlinks"

Bought links from site networks are recognisable and carry a penalty risk. Twenty real local links beat two hundred purchased ones.

"Put the keyword everywhere"

Repeating the same phrase to the point of nonsense is penalised. Google has long understood synonyms and related concepts, so natural copy performs better than stuffed copy.

"SEO is free"

There is no charge per click, but there is a cost in work and time. The difference is that an ad stops the moment you stop paying, while SEO keeps bringing traffic.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does the abbreviation SEO stand for?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It means adapting a website so it appears high in Google results for the phrases your customers search.

What is the difference between SEO and Google Ads?

Google Ads is paid per click and the ad disappears the moment you stop paying. SEO is not charged per click but takes months to start working. In practice they complement each other best: ads bring traffic immediately, SEO takes over after a few months.

How long does SEO take to show results?

First movement on long-tail phrases with little competition usually appears after two to three months. Meaningful growth on phrases with real volume takes four to six months. On a brand-new domain everything takes longer.

Can I do SEO myself?

You can do the basics and it is worth doing: Search Console, Google Business Profile, page speed and unique titles. Content strategy, technical audits and link building take time and tools, so that is usually where outside help comes in.

Does SEO make sense for a small business in Bosnia?

It does, but not because of volume - because of intent. Phrases in Bosnia have small search numbers, but the people typing them want a specific service in a specific town. Ten such visits are worth more than a thousand random ones.

Does SEO affect whether AI tools cite me?

It does, but through different preparation. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI summaries cite content that answers a question directly, with a concrete number or definition in the first two sentences. A sales page is rarely cited; a page with an answer often is.

What is the biggest SEO mistake?

Expecting results without content. A site with five sales pages has nothing to rank for and nothing worth linking to. Content that answers real questions is the base; everything else is built on top.

Is SEO the same for every industry?

No. A local service business gains most from the Google Business Profile and local signals, an online store from category and product optimisation, and a software company from long informational queries. The strategy follows how your customer searches.
