Hosting and domain

A domain is your website’s address, and hosting is the space on a server where the site actually lives. They are 2 separate services, often bought in the same place but not necessarily. The domain is paid annually, hosting monthly or annually, and both must be registered in your name.

How they differ

A domain is only a name - what someone types into a browser. It holds no files and does nothing on its own.

Hosting is the server holding the pages, images and database. When someone types the domain, the name system directs them to the server where the content actually sits.

That is why they can be separated: the domain with one provider, hosting with another. It is entirely normal and sometimes practical, because migrating hosting does not touch the domain.

Choosing a domain

A short name that is easy to say over the phone and needs no spelling out. Hyphens and numbers create confusion in a spoken recommendation.

For the Bosnian market a country extension carries local trust and states clearly where you operate. An international extension makes sense if you also target outside the region.

Check whether the name is already used on social platforms and whether it is protected as a trademark. Changing a name is cheaper before you have built recognition.

Register it in your own name and to your own email. This is the most common mistake in small companies - a domain registered to an agency or a friend becomes a problem the day your paths diverge.

What to watch in hosting

Server location. A server closer to your visitors responds faster, which shows directly in the speed score.

An included certificate and automatic backups. Both should be standard today, and charging them separately signals an outdated offer.

Support and response time. When a site goes down, the difference between an answer in an hour and one in two days is the difference between an inconvenience and lost business.

Room to grow. Shared hosting is perfectly sufficient for a brochure site, but an online store with rising traffic eventually needs a stronger plan.

What gets overlooked

Domain renewal. A forgotten renewal means the site and email stop working, and in some cases the name can be taken by someone else. Enable automatic renewal.

Email on the domain. A business address on your own domain looks more serious than a free one, and it is often included in the hosting plan.

Access credentials. Ask for them at the start of the engagement, not when you need them. The hosting control panel and the registrar account must be available to you.

Migration. Check in advance whether the provider allows a full export of files and database. Lock-in is usually discovered only when you decide to leave.

How hosting affects speed and ranking

Server response time is the first step in every page load. If the server answers slowly, everything after it - optimised images, clean code - starts with a delay that cannot be recovered.

That is why server location matters. For visitors from Bosnia and the region, a server in Europe responds noticeably better than one on another continent, and the price difference is usually small.

On shared hosting many sites live on the same machine, so someone else’s traffic can slow yours. On a brochure site this is rarely noticed; on an online store in peak season it is noticed immediately.

A practical check takes a minute: measure the response through any loading measurement tool and look at how long the first server reply takes. If that number is high, the problem is not the design but the hosting.
